Kim Jong-un commits to ‘complete denuclearisation’ of Korean Peninsula

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has committed to the “complete denuclearisation” of the Korean Peninsula after his historic summit with United States President Donald Trump in Singapore on Tuesday. In exchange, Trump committed to provide unspecified ‘security guarantees’ to Kim in a joint document they signed after their meeting. The two traditional enemies have agreed to establish new relations.

The leaders of North Korea and the United States have never met previously since 1950-53 Korean War.

The following points are mentioned in the agreement: (Reported by ABC News)

1. The United States and the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) commit to establish new US-DPRK relation in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity.

2. The United States and the DPRK will join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.

3.Reaffirming the April 27, 20198 Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK commits to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

4.The United States and the DPRK commit to recovering POW/MIA remains, including the immediate repatriation of those already identified.

The United States and the DPRK committed to hold follow-on negotiations, led by the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, and a relevant high-level DPRK official, at the earliest possible date, to implement the outcomes of the US-DPRK summit.

US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un addressed the media after signing the ‘comprehensive documents’. Trump said he expected the denuclearisation process to start “very, very quickly”.

The 71 year old Trump called the 33 year old Kim ‘very smart’, ‘talented’ and a ‘very worthy and hard negotiator’. He said that he would love to invite Kim to the White House as they have developed a very special bond.
